I offer the following classes for teens and adults.  See Current Classes for a schedule:

Natural Science Illustration for Teens (Ages 13-19): A class exploring the wonders of nature through applied art.  We will draw insects, Arachnids, water drops, animals, seashells, bones, feathers, fur, fungi and flowers using a variety of techniques including pen & ink, scratchboard, watercolor, acrylics and graphite. Students will also learn about various artists and be gently guided in the art of critique.

Natural Science Illustration for Beginners (Ages 10-14): A class exploring the wonders of nature through applied art.  We will draw insects, Arachnids, water drops, animals, seashells, bones, feathers, fur, fungi and flowers using a variety of techniques including pen & ink, scratchboard, watercolor, acrylics and graphite. Students will also learn about various artists and be gently guided in the art of critique.

Natural Science Illustration for Veteran Illustrators: A class for experienced Veteran students whose pieces may take three or more sessions to complete.

Let’s Draw Dragons (Ages 10-14): A class covering the depiction of European dragons, Chinese dragons, & sea serpents; their appearance, behavior, mythology, & biological theories of origin.

Celtic Art: Celtic Calligraphy, Celtic Knots, Illumination, Mythological beings; Pictish Art & Ogham, Celtic Plants.

Zoological Illustration: A class presenting an overview of the animal kingdom through discussion of selected taxonomic groups, as well as techniques for representing dimension, texture, and detail of various types of animals.

Botanical Illustration: With herbaria and live specimens for reference, students will produce botanical images in watercolor, graphite, watercolor and pen & ink. Topics will include plant parts, dissection, studies, and Fibonacci forms.

Natural Science Illustration in Color: Focus on colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, and mixed media. Lessons include: Color wheels and charts; Color terms (hue, tint, shade, etc.); Layering in colored pencil; watercolor.

Ancient History through Art: From Paleolithic cave paintings through Egyptian hieroglyphics, Cuneiform tablets and Sumi-e, to the Roman Empire, we will explore and emulate the finest of early human art.

Colored Pencil:  Using Prismacolor pencils, we will explore the tools, terminology, and techniques of the art form. While learning the tricks and secrets of creating colored pencil illustrations, students will be taught layering, combining and complimenting colors and be introduced to shading and blending methods. Students will use several types of surfaces such as mixed media, pencil, colored paper and drafting film; and rise to the challenge of drawing water drops.

Pen & Ink and Scratchboard Art: A class is for both the beginner and experienced artist covering basic and advanced pen & ink and scratchboard techniques, tools use and colored inks.

Classical Fantasy Illustration: Using a variety of techniques we will draw castles & dragons, kelpies & selkies, fairies & elves, knights & ladies, unicorns, orcs, goblins, and wizards & witches. We will also explore ancient scripts and discuss artists such as Maxfield Parrish and N.C. Wyeth.

Portraits in graphite: Using graphite (9B to 6H), charcoal and pastel pencils, students will be learning to draw the human face: eyes, noses, lips, hair, facial expressions, bone structure, front and side profiles.

Illustrating the Human: Students will use a variety of media: scratchboard, pastel, graphite, watercolor and colored pencil to cover human portraiture and expression, human anatomy, and basic figure drawing.
