The Scottish Chiefs

Scottish Chiefs Images small

We are pleased to be offering prints of the illustrations of N.C. Wyeth executed for Jane Porter’s 1810 narrative novel about William Wallace titled The Scottish Chiefs. Wyeth, an “American Golden Age Illustrator,” was the star pupil of Howard Pyle, and the creator of over 3,000 paintings illustrating 112 books many of which were done for Scribner’s . These paintings for which he is best known were painted in 1921 in oil on canvas using the Thomas Crowell Company of New York’s undated version of The Scottish Chiefs which was illustrated with photographs fof Scotland.

Wyeth was known as both an illustrator and a “realist” painter. His sometimes melodramatic paintings were meant to be understood quickly. Living at the time of the advent of photography he increasingly had to compete with that form of illustration.

Our prints have been rescued from 1921 to 1935 editions of The Scottish Chiefs published by Charles Scribner and Sons .  The 1921 editions contained 14 illustrations found throughout the novel as well as cover, endpaper and title page illustrations. Due to copyright issues the 1924, 1935 and 1941 editions only contained 9 interior illustrations. In 1949 the copyright was renewed with Carolyn B Wyeth and following editions contained all 14 illustrations once again.

The prints we offer vary slightly in size, but are approximately 7″ x 9.25″ and cost $15.00 each.

Full sets of the  illustrations (plus cover, endpaper and title page illustrations) may be purchased as a set (12 to 17  illustrations depending upon the publication date).  Scroll to the end of the page for prices.
