Classics Illustrated Comic Books

We are now carrying three of the Classics Illustrated comic books or “graphic novels:” The Scottish Chiefs, MacBeth and Rob Roy. The overall Classics Illustrated series began publication in 1941 and finished its first run in 1971, producing 169 issues. Several editions of each were produced – usually identified by the highest reorder number (HRN) listed inside or on the back of the issue. First Printings usually have an ad inside for the next issue.

The Scottish Chiefs

This comic is a 15¢ edition of Classics Illustrated #67 (HRN 67) based on Jane Porter’s novel, The Scottish Chiefs, the book upon which the film, Braveheart, was based. The first edition of this comic was published in January 1950 and re-issues printed until 1965.  The first editions had a line drawing cover; later editions a watercolor cover.  This copy was illustrated by Alex. A. Blum and adapted by John H. O’Rourke. The last four pages inlcude essays about the author, Jane Porter; the inventor of the machine gun, Richard Jordan Gatling; a dog hero, Skippy; and the famous opera, Othello. Interior very good condition, pages somewhat yellowed as with any old comic book. You will receive the actual comic book pictured..

This Classics Illustrated comic #67 – Scottish Chiefs (HRN 167) ia an August 1965 edition in quite good condition with a watercolor cover illustration.  Illustrated by Alex. A. Blum and adapted by John H. O’Rourke, the last four pages inlcude essays about the author, Jane Porter; the inventor of the machine gun, Richard Jordan Gatling; a dog hero, Skippy; and the famous opera, Othello. Interior very good condition, pages somewhat yellowed as with any old comic book, small ink line on the cover. You will receive the actual comic book pictured.

MacBeth Classics Illustrated #128 June 1964 (HRN 167) issue based on William Shakespeare’s play, MacBeth. set in Scotland in locations that may be visited to this dayThe last four pages contain an essay titled William Shakespeare; a two page comic spread titled,The Story of Great Britain Part 2: The Roman Conquest; and a final essay titled, Banquo’s Descendant, concerning the history upon which Shakespeare based his play. Very good, moderate wear, cover 2 tiny tears and small bend. MacBeth is a Spring 1970 25¢ (HRN 169) edition of Classics Illustrated #128 based on William Shakespeare’s play, MacBeth. set in Scotland in locations that may be visited to this dayThe last four pages contain an essay titled William Shakespeare; a two page comic spread titled,The Story of Great Britain Part 2: The Roman Conquest; and a final essay titled, Banquo’s Descendant, concerning the history upon which Shakespeare based his play. This copy is in good condition with stiff covers, a slight bend in the lower cover corner as shown above, and the discoloration to be expected from comics of this era. You will receive the actual comic book pictured.

Rob Roy

Rob Roy Comic CSRR01b

Rob Roy is a first printing April 1954 (HRN 169) 15¢ edition of Classics Illustrated #118  48 pp. Essays on the last pages: Sir Walter Scott, Hero of the Highlands (Rob Roy), and Winning the Northwest Territories (George Rogers Clark). This comic has a fairly nice looking cover shine. The flaws are typical of what one would find in this condition, such as a bit of a worn spine with light stress marks, a lightly written in number at the top left hand corner of the front cover, a staple tear, some inside cover tanning, and some small rear dirty spots. Inside, everything is complete, with no coupons or panels cut out, as the structure is solid with no brittleness. You will receive the actual comic book pictured.
